Course Overview

The general objective of the Department of Co-operatives and Rural Development is to embark on co-operative education and training to churns out adequate number of personnel to efficiently manages co-operative societies and related organizations in the country and beyon.

This course provides an understanding of cooperatives as a model of organization that creates both social and economic value.

Cooperative management, also co-management, tries to achieve more effective and equitable systems of resource management. It helps to mobilize human skills, processes as well as technical and financial resources. Cooperative management is closely allied with collaborative management, participatory management, community management, joint management, and stakeholder management.

Entry Requirements ND

To qualify for a place in the department of Cooperative Economics , five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following: Economics, Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Literature in English, Commerce, History, Statistics, geography, Government Agric Science/Biology obtained at not more than two sittings.

A credit pass in N.B.T.E. recognized pre National Diploma Examination.

Entry Requirements HND.

The entry requirements for the HND in Cooperative Economics are;

  • (a) A minimum of lower credit pass (CGPA of 2.50) in ND Cooperative Economics or related programme and a minimum of one year post- ND Cognate work experience.

Further Education:

An ND graduate with CGPA of 2.50 and above can apply for direct entry to university for B.Sc in Cooperative Economics and other related business courses.

A HND holder with CGPA 2.50 and above can also apply for direct entry for B.Sc in Cooperative Economics and Management or any other Business related courses.

A HND holder with at least 3.00 CGPA is also qualified to apply for Post Graduate Diploma (P.GD) in management which will qualify the candidate to apply for MBA or M.Sc in management or other Business related courses.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates of this degree program can seek employment with government agencies such as public works, parks and recreation, housing, transportation or numerous others at the local, state or federal level. Depending on the concentration of study, they can also find opportunities in education, healthcare or law enforcement. Also, the course provides an excellent training for further studies leading to post-graduate studies like MBA or MA/MSC and PHD degree programmes in Finance Economics, Business Management, Research Assignment, etc.
